Photos from Nanumea
Paitela leads a service in the Fale Tapu — 20 May 1984
We lived in Nanumea from June 1973 through the end of 1974. As part of our project we photographed each family on Nanumea. In each photo some family members were not present: children at school, adults working in the bush or fishing, working in Funafuti, at Banaba, Nauru, Fiji, NZ, or as seamen on ships, etc.
We returned after almost 10 years away, this time with our young daughters Nonu (Lorien) and Kilea (Claire), staying in Nanumea from late December 1983 until late May 1984. During this period we again photographed each family on the island. As before, some people are missing from the pictures.
Together with the church, the Ahiga is the heart of Nanumean community life.
