Sunema Rongorongo and Anne Chambers in Haumaefa after meeting Teiapa, Kusa and Henga at their house - October 1973

1973-74 Household Groups

During our first stay in Nanumea from June 1973 to January 1975,we visited with each household between August 8th and early December, 1973. At that time there were 144 individual households (matakaaiga). We used these visits to get to know each household and we took down a variety of information about each of them. We also requested that each household have as many members present as possible so that we could take a photograph of them at the completion of the visit. These photographs were taken using a 35mm camera and black and white film.

We started the household survey at the Haumaefa end of the village, moved on through Lolua, then to Matagi, Motufoliki and finally Lakena. We gave each household a number and we have used these numbers here for convenience.

We thank each family for its gracious hospitality and for allowing us to take these photos. Many of the elders in the pictures have now passed away, and the many children in the pictures are today adults, often married with their own children and grandchildren. These pictures from 1973 and 1974 contain treasured memories of Nanumea from more than 50 years ago!
